Take measures to prevent HPV

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a cancer-causing virus, but the HPV vaccination protects against it.  However, the HPV vaccination has significantly reduced the frequency of cases among young individuals. 1

Frequently asked questions

What is HPV?

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of more than 100 viruses. It is most common in people in their late teens and early twenties. Most people will be infected with a form of HPV in their lifetime.

You can catch HPV by being sexually active with another person who already has the virus.

Why do I need the HPV vaccine?

While most HPV infections are cleared naturally by the body and don't require treatment, in some individuals, the virus can persist and lead to the development of genital warts or cause cellular changes that may progress to cancer. If the infection develops further, HPV can cause cancer of the cervix, vulva, vagina, anus, oropharynx (the part of the throat at the back of the mouth), and penis.

What is the price of the vaccine?

Irish Clinic's HPV vaccine assessment costs €35. The cost of the HPV vaccine itself is additional and can vary, so we'd recommend that you check with your local pharmacy.
